Elma "Alice" Barnes Scott, 96, of Alford, Florida died Wednesday, April 12, 2023, after a short illness. She graduated from Cottondale High School in 1945. She married her lifelong love, Pete, in 1947 after having been known as “Pete’s Girl” from childhood. They moved to Panama City, where she worked for the Southern Bell Telephone Company before they started a family.
Alice and Pete had a deep passion for travel and together they visited all 50 states (many of them twice), all Canadian provinces, and parts of Mexico. She had a lifelong desire to see everything she could see, and she passed that passion on to her children and grandchildren. Driven by her unquenchable curiosity, positive demeanor, and steadfast energy, she embraced every new experience with gusto. Alice loved to hear stories from her friends and family of new places they’d been, and she encouraged everyone she met to see and do everything they possibly could. She was a lifelong gardener, homemaker, Southern cook, and adventurer. Among her cooking talents, she was well-known for her amazing biscuits, which she’d been making without a recipe since the age of 5. Alice cherished her time with her daughters, sons-in-law, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Alice was preceded in death by her husband Leon Cecil “Pete” Scott, her mother, Hettie Mills Barnes; father, Hosea Barnes; brothers, Dick, Buck, and Edgar Barnes; and a sister, Etta Morris.
She is survived by her two daughters, Renee Scott Hopkins and husband, Eddie of Compass Lake; Sonya Scott Goolsby and husband, Craig of Fairhope, AL; her grandchildren, Scott Edward Hopkins and his wife, Kristin of Denver, CO, John William Hopkins and his wife, Aleese of Raleigh, NC, Allison Eleanor Hopkins of Tallahassee, FL, Alexandra Elise Goolsby Venable and her husband, James of Tuscaloosa, AL, and Walter Scott Goolsby of Troy, AL. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Ayden Edward Hopkins and Lochlan Peter Hopkins. In addition, her sister-in-law Annette Williams and her husband Jimmy of Panama City Beach, FL and a host of nieces, nephews and extended family are left to remember her fondly.
Graveside services will be Monday, April 17, 2023, at 3:00 PM at Alford City Cemetery with Rev. Chris Franklin officiating and James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel directing.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the graveside service at Alford Methodist Church.
Alice’s family would like to acknowledge the staff and residents of the Terrace at Grove Park in Dothan who embraced her with care and love during her time there.
