It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Vera Mae Rehberg, lovingly known as "Granny." She was a devoted Christian and cherished family member who peacefully entered into the presence of her Lord on February 27, 2025, at her residence, surrounded by her family. She was born on November 20, 1932, in Marianna, Florida, to the late Robert Lee and Mary Jane Raines. Vera Mae was a faithful member of New Salem Baptist Church.
Vera Mae was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great grandmother and friend. She was known for her unwavering faith, kind spirit, and commitment to her family. Vera Mae’s dedication to her family was unmatched, always putting them first and ensuring they felt her care and support.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Shirley Rehberg. Vera Mae and Shirley were united in marriage on January 21, 1955, and shared 70 loving years together. Their bond was built on trust, faith, and mutual respect, laying a strong foundation for a life filled with countless memories. Their love for each other was a testament to the beauty of true partnership, and they shared a bond that was both deeply spiritual and profoundly loving. Together, they built a life filled with joy, faith, and support. Their love story will be remembered as one of the greatest blessings in theirs and their families lives.
In her younger years, Vera Mae was an active and beloved member of her church community. She sang in the choir, sharing her beautiful voice during worship services, and served as a dedicated church clerk, assisting with various administrative tasks. Vera Mae’s passion for her church family and her service to God were reflected in everything she did. She was also well-known for her love of cooking. No matter the time of day, if you visited Vera’s home, you were sure to be offered a meal. Her kitchen was always filled with delicious aromas, and she took great joy in feeding others. Vera’s home was never without an open door and a plate of food—no one ever left her house hungry.
Vera Mae, along with her sisters—Jenell, Katherine, and Christine—and her niece Laura, created many cherished memories traveling together. Those trips were filled with laughter, joy, and a deep sisterly bond that remained throughout her life.
She leaves behind her daughter, Kathy York (Rory) of Cottondale, and 7 grandchildren: Bobby Self (Amanda), Joy Taylor (Wade), April Brock (Justin), Twila Ball (Matt), Clint Rehberg, Cheryl Blackmon (John), and Mary Harris (Franco). She was preceded in death by her son, Mike Rehberg, whose loss she felt profoundly. Vera Mae also leaves behind 18 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Vera Mae is also survived by her beloved sisters: Jenell Melvin, Katherine Wright, and Christine Tice (James). She was preceded in death by her brothers, Robert and Danny Raines, who are now reunited with her in heaven.
A celebration of Vera Mae’s life will be held on March 1, 2025, at New Salem Baptist Church, 3478 Kynesville Road, Marianna, Florida. Visitation and viewing will begin at 9:00 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 10:00 a.m. with Reverends Ronnie Wright and Joey Woodruff.
Burial will take place in New Salem Baptist Church following the service with James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel directing.
Though Vera Mae will be deeply missed, her legacy of devotion, faith, and kindness will continue to inspire all who knew her. She now rests in eternal peace, reunited with her Savior, mother, father and her beloved son, Mike. May her memory continue to guide and uplift us all.
