He was a native and lifelong resident of Jackson County. He retired from Jim Woodruff Lock and Dam in Chattahoochee in 1985, following his retirement he enjoyed farming. Preceded in death by his parents, Alton Thomas Smith and Emma Estel Neel Smith; two sisters,Donna Fay Nelson, Velma Weeks; two brother, Verna Otis Smith and Edward Ray Smith. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Madie Smith; two daughters, Juanita Pippin and husband, David of Sneads, Rita Rolph and husband, Murray of Ekalaka, MT; seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; two sisters, Bessie Emmaleen Strickland and Annie Sanders both of Sneads; lifetime friend, Maxwell Weeks. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at Emmanuel Holiness Church with Eva Howell and Jack Howell officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel directing. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday at James & Sikes Maddox Chapel.
