Sarah Ann Grant, of Bascom Florida, died at her home on Sunday, August 23, 2015 surrounded by her family and staff of Covenant Hospice. Mrs. Grant touched the lives of thousands of Jackson County school children during her career as a school teacher and her tenure with the Jackson County School Board. She is preceded in death by her husband, Wallace H. Grant and her son, John Wallace Grant. She is survived by three children, Gwen Grant Williams,(Mark) Mike Grant (Louise) Mary Leigh Dudley (William), and six grandchildren, Aly Williams, John Robert Grant, Amber Grant, Ben and Grant Dudley, and Margaret Grant. She leaves behind her beloved friend, Brantley Ditty. Mrs. Grant was born in Alabama and raised by Reverend and Mrs. Glenn Howell. She graduated from Greenwood High School, and obtained her teaching degree form Troy State University. She earned her Master's Degree in Education while raising four children and working fulltime. Mrs. Grant taught for 27 years in Jackson County with 15 years being in gifted education at Hope School. After her retirement she was elected to the Jackson County School Board. Mrs. Grant was a vital member of her community. She volunteered as the pianist at Bascom and Greenwood Methodist Church, and chaired many committees around the area. She was a member and served as president of the Phi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma. Mrs. Grant was the epitome of a strong and gentle southern woman who was keenly intelligent. She will be remembered for her stately poise, grace and dignity. Her greatest love was children, and it was her wish for all the children of Jackson County to have the opportunity of a good education. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, August 27, 2015 at the Bascom United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel directing. The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, August 26, 2015 at James & Sikes Maddox Chapel. Flowers accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the Bascom United Methodist Church or Covenant Hospice.
