Pete Scott

January 31, 1926 — July 9, 2016

Leon Cecil "Pete" Scott, 90, of Alford, died Saturday, July 9, 2016, on the same land where he was born.

Pete graduated from Cottondale High School in 1943. He joined the Navy in January, 1944 and served on LST 701 during World War II. Pete was honorably discharged from the Navy in May of 1946. He returned to North Florida to work in Civil Service at Tyndall Air Force Base until his retirement in 1975.

Pete was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and fishing with family and friends. But his favorite activity was travel. He and Alice visited all 50 states, every Canadian province and parts of Mexico.

Pete was very involved in the Presbyterian Church, beginning with St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Panama City. The family was instrumental in the formation of Covenant Presbyterian Church (PCA) with Pete serving as a founding Elder. Upon return to Jackson County in 1983, Pete and Alice were involved with the Alford United Methodist, the church of his childhood.
Pete was very involved in his grandchildren's lives. He and Alice hosted many grandchildren only trips. They watched numerous academic events, baseball and soccer games, dance recitals, band performances, school plays, and wakeboard tournaments.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William Leslie and Myrtle Davis Scott; four brothers, Leslie Goulden Scott, Herbert Eugene Scott, John Farrell Scott, and Thomas Davis Scott and one sister, Phyllis Scott.

He is survived by his wife of almost 69 years, Elma Alice Barnes Scott of Alford; two daughters, Renee Scott Hopkins and husband Eddie of Compass Lake, Sonya Scott Goolsby and husband Craig of Fairhope, AL and one sister, Annette S. Williams and husband Jimmy of Panama City Beach. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Scott Edward Hopkins of Pittsburgh, PA, John William Hopkins and his wife, Aleese of Alexandria, VA, Allison Eleanor Hopkins of Compass Lake, Alexandra Elise Goolsby of Tuscaloosa, AL, and Walter Scott Goolsby of Fairhope, AL.

Graveside Services will be at 2:30 PM, Tuesday, July 12, 2016 at Alford City Cemetery with James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel directing. The family will receive friends from 1 PM until service time at the Alford First United Methodist Church.
