James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel Nyla Jean Peeler, 82, of Greenwood passed away on Thursday, May 16, 2013, at Marianna Health & Rehabilitation Center after a long battle with Parkinson's disease. Nyla was born in Steger, Illinois, on January 12, 1931, and graduated from Crescent City High School. She married the love of her life, Nicholas Bowles Peeler, on May 30, 1951, and they built a life in south Florida with their first child, Deborah. They then moved to Jackson County in 1971, where they developed what was known as the Green Thumb Farm Store & Nursery on Highway 71 in Greenwood. Nyla retired from McKee Engineering after more than 20 years of service as a purchasing agent and resided in Greenwood after retirement. She is preceded in death by her parents, Bernhard and Lillian Behrens, brother Delmar Behrens, and loving husband, Nick. She is survived by three daughters, Deborah Peck and husband Steve of Richmond, Va., Rebecca Arnold and husband Dennis of Greenwood, and Susan Barnes and husband Rick of Greenwood; four grandchildren, Brad Calloway, Emma Peck, Justin Barnes, and Carly Barnes; step-grandchildren Melissa Rich and Devon Maresca; and four great grandchildren; one brother, Gordon Behrens and wife, Beverly of Iowa. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, May 19, 2013 at James & Sikes Maddox Chapel with Rev. Mike Daniels officiating. Burial will follow in Pinecrest Memorial Gardens with James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel directing. The family will receive friends, at 1 p.m. Sunday, May 19, 2013, one hour prior to services at James & Sikes Maddox Chapel.
