James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel 4278 Lafayette Street Marianna, FL 32446 850.482.2332 850.526.4143 Martha "Alice" Burton Vanhuss, 75, of Marianna, FL died at home after an extended battle with cancer. Alice was a native of Thomasville, GA. were she graduated from Thomasville High School. She then earned her BS degree in Health & Physical Education from the Georgia State College for Women before obtaining her Master's of Arts Degree from George Peabody College for Teachers. Alice was a physical education teacher and varsity girl's basketball coach. She retired from the Fulton County School System to become a full time homemaker. Alice was a member of the First Methodist Church of Marianna and the United Methodist Women's club. She was preceded in death by her parents Herbert David Burton and Ila Victoria Martin Burton; a sister, Jewell Hewitt and brother, H. Harold Burton. Alice is survived by her loving husband, Estill Ray Vanhuss and son, Michael Ray VanHuss and his wife Kelly Jackson VanHuss; three grandchildren Quaid, Brolin and Nevin VanHuss of Marianna, FL; brother, George Burton of Crawfordville, FL; sister, Mary Burton Knepton of Fairhope, AL; her extended family of loving in-laws, nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 9, 2009 at James & Sikes Maddox Chapel with Rev. Bob Calvert and Dr. Bob McKibben officiating. burial will follow in Pinecrest Memorial Gardens with James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel directing. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Friday at James & Sikes Maddox Chapel. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church "Capital Maintenance Fund" of Marianna, FL.
