He attended Grace Assembly of God Church in Chipley until he became too frail to do so. He and his wife Lorene, were avid motor home travelers and toured all over the United States often taking along family and friends. They also enjoyed many days and nights camping and fishing local lakes and rivers with Lorene's sister and her husband, Ernestine and Tillman Christmas, special friends, Annette and Jerold Perkins all of Cottondale and many others. But no matter what they were doing or who they were with, their favorite pastime was spending time with their pride and joy, grandsons Chip and Rusty. Huey enlisted in the Army in 1945 at the age of 18. He earned distinction as a sharp shooter while at Ft. Benning, Georgia and later became a paratrooper in the 10th Airborne Division. He was stationed in Japan at the end of WWII where he and the rest of the 10th Airborne jumped into Hiroshima becoming the first Americans to enter the city after the atomic bomb. After an honorable discharge from the Army in 1947, Huey became a farmer, truck driver, construction worker and finally owner and operator of his own business: Barrentine's Land Clearing. Jackson County and the surrounding area is dotted with the numerous fishpond's he dug and land he cleared. By the time they were 10 years old, both Chip and Rusty had been taught how to operate a bulldozer and looked forward to helping "Granddaddy." Rusty later followed in his grandfather's footsteps and established his own company. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 63 years, Lorene in 2008, his parents, Lee and Vassie Barrentine, in laws, Lonzie and Allie Mae Broom all of Cottondale, brother and wife, Colin and Irene Barrentine of Phenix City, Alabama, brother, John Barrentine of Camilla, Georgia, brother-in-law, Tillman Christmas of Cottondale, nephews, Hubert Barrentine of Alabama and Ronnie Barrentine of Georgia and niece Lavonne Christmas Dilmore-Gause of Tallahassee.
