James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel Mr. Hubert Ellis Mitchell, 88, of Marianna, died Friday, September 26, 2014 in Marianna. Hubert was born in Graceville, FL, moved to Marianna and graduated from Marianna High School in 1944. After graduation, he joined the United States Navy where he was assigned to the USS Nashville and saw action in the Pacific theater. Mr. Mitchell moved back to Marianna in 1946 and attended the new Chipola Jr. College for two years. In 1948 he married Gwendolyn Hires. He worked for the US Postal Service for three years. He worked as an investigator for the Retail Credit Company which later became Equifax until he retired. Hubert was an avid golfer and knew every blade of grass on the Caverns Golf Course in Marianna. The only days he would not play were Monday and Wednesday, but that was negotiable. He loved to brag about his three holes in one and would tee off at 12:15 each time he played. He was the last of the Charter Members of the Mark Out coffee club where he had been a member since its conception in 1963. He was the president at the time of his death. Hubert was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Marianna and Dean Skaggs Sunday school class. He was preceded in death by his wife of 35 years, Gwendolyn Hires Mitchell; parents, William Mitchell and Lee Mitchell Williams; brothers, Billy Mitchell and John D. Mitchell. He is survived by his wife, Joan Rice Mitchell; children, Donna Mitchell Paramore and husband, Scott, Teresa Mitchell Howie and husband Jim; grandchildren, Jeffrey Paramore and fiance, Eloise Lee, Dr. Susan Paramore Compton and husband, Jay, Katie Howie and fiance, Michael Kraft and Lindsay Howie; great-grandchildren, Stephanie Paramore, Isabella Paramore, Sam Compton; niece, Suzanne Mitchell Labarbara, children, Kristen Covey and Alex Labarbara and step children, Jim Rice, Susan Shively and Mark Rice. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, September 30, 2014 at the First United Methodist Church of Marianna with Rev. Bill Elwell officiating. Interment will follow in Pinecrest Memorial Gardens with James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel directing. Honorary pallbearers will be The Mark Out coffee club. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, September 29, 2014 at James & Sikes Maddox Chapel. A special thanks to all the staff at Hospice of the Emerald Coast for their love and care.
