Homer Roswell Deuel, Jr. Homer Roswell Deuel, Jr., 91 passed away at his home in Malone, Florida on August 19, 2014. Born in 1923, in Loxley, Alabama, the family moved to Castleberry, Alabama where Homer spent his childhood. He was a graduate of the University of Alabama with a degree in Business Administration and he later received an additional BS in Physical Education and his Masters in School Administration from Troy University. Homer served in the Army Air Force as a tail gunner on a B-17, flying 50 missions out of Foggia, Italy during World War II. After the war he came with his family to Malone as an assistant basketball coach, serving in that position for three years and later became head Coach serving in this capacity for 16 years. During these coaching years he was voted Coach of the Year in 1957, 1958, 1960, 1961, and 1962. In 1968, Homer became Principal of Malone High School and remained in that position for 19 years retiring in 1986. During his tenure as principal he was chosen as one of Florida's Top 50 Principals. After retirement he enjoyed playing golf, traveling with his family, attending football games at the University of Alabama and local games at Malone High School and surrounding areas. Homer is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mary Katherine and their daughter, Phyllis Deuel of Malone; his sister, Charmian Pope of Castleberry, Alabama; brother, Charley James Deuel (Janice) of Mobile, Alabama; brother-in law, Robert Erwin Ramey (Peggy), of Greensboro, Alabama; many loving nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 10 am Friday, August 22, 2014 at Malone United Methodist Church with Rev. John Smith and Chaplain Jack Howell of Covenant Hospice officiating. Interment will follow at Pinecrest Memorial Gardens with James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel directing. The family are receiving friends Thursday, August 21, 2014 from 3-7 P.M.at his residence in Malone. All former basketball players are requested to serve as Honorary Pallbearers. Memorial contributions in Mr. Deuel's name, may be made to Malone United Methodist Church, Malone High School or to Covenant Hospice, 4215 Kelson Ave., Suite E, Marianna, Florida 32446.
