Harry Powell

d. September 29, 2014

James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel 4278 Lafayette Street Marianna, Florida 32446 850.482.2332 Reverend Harry Powell went to be with the Lord on September 29, 2014 surrounded by his loving family. Born in Kynesville, Florida on March 1, 1926 to Neal Alton Powell and Annie Randolph Mercer Powell, he grew up in Marianna and Panama City. He worked at the shipyard prior to serving in the U.S. Army. After accepting the call to the ministry he attended New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, accepted the call to begin a church in Elyria, Ohio, and pastored numerous Baptist churches in Florida. He also was the pastor for Marianna Health and Rehabilitation Center for many years where the residents were his special congregation. Self-described as a "Jack-of-all trades and master of none", he was a mechanic, carpenter, farmer, mail carrier, stevedore, patriot, school bus driver, but most of all a "fisher of men." His life work was to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ to everyone he met. He was fondly known as "Preacher" but "pastor" is more fitting. Preaching on Sunday wasn't his only responsibility---ministering to the needs of his congregation was more important-visiting the sick and hurting, celebrating marriages, births and special occasions, consoling those in times of loss, and spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ to those lost in sin. Know by many names--Harry, Honey, Daddy, Papa, Granddaddy, Preacher, Reverend. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Jim B Powell; brother, Ralph Powell; four daughters, Gail Powell, Karan Davis (Bill), Jane Stephens (Allen), Joan Sutton (Wayne); one son, Danny Powell (Sharon); grandchildren Christy Davis, Heath Davis, Benjamin Sutton, Jessica Gibbs, Holly Mudd, Wesley Stephens and Jillian Etress; great grandchildren Linsey and Lexie Basford; Anna Grace Jerkins; Cole Shelton; Makayla, Adalyn, Louie and Zachary Mudd; Allie Stephens; Leland and Carlie Gibbs and Ivee Crawford. Preceded in death by his parents; brothers Alton and Major; sisters Myrtle, Laura and Susie; and granddaughter Amanda Jane Sutton. Graveside funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday October 1, 2014 at Sims Cemetery with Revs. Henry Fullington & Rhul Edenfield officiating. James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel will direct. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, September, 30, 2014 at James & Sikes Maddox Chapel.
