James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel H. Doyle (Pott) NeSmith, age 80, of Chattahoochee, passed away peacefully at home after a yearlong battle with lung and brain cancer on February 20, 2012. Funeral services will be Friday, February 24, 2012 at 10AM (Central) at James and Sikes Funeral home Sneads Chapel 7735 Highway 90 West in Sneads, Florida. Burial will be at Sycamore Cemetery, Sycamore FL. Friends may call at James and Sikes Funeral Home in Sneads, FL on Thursday, February 23, 2012 from 5p.m. to 7p.m. (Central). Pott was born September 9, 1931 in the Alliance community in Jackson County to Lester and Rossie NeSmith. He attended Antioch Baptist Church in Alliance. Pott's first job was as a Grit newspaper delivery boy. He saved enough money from his route to buy his first bicycle. In September 1949, he came to work at Florida State Hospital at Amos Infirmary kitchen, became a volunteer fireman, and then became a supervisor in the paint department while working in the construction department. He became a member of Woodmen of the World in 1950. He retired from the state in 1982 after working 33 years. Throughout his working life and retirement, he enjoyed fishing in the Apalachicola River, gardening and hunting. He was known in the community for sharing his excess vegetables brought from his garden in Jackson County and catching up on the news around town with friends at the river. He enjoyed spoiling his grand kids by letting them do things their parents wouldn't, like taking them for rides on the Gator (and letting them steer) and giving them snack bags of candy for the trip home. Pott is survived by his wife of 48 years, Mary B., two daughters Belinda NeSmith Brooks of Charleston, SC, Mary Beth Miller and her husband Rod of Seminole, FL, five grandchildren Robert Lewis, William Doyle, Mary-Elizabeth Corine, and James Thomas Miller of Seminole FL, Thomas Ely Brooks of Charleston SC, four sisters Allie Jean (Sis) Howell of the Rosedale community, Marjorie Keel of St. Petersburg, FL, Frances Porter of West Palm Beach, FL, and Carolyn Rivera of Largo, FL and many nieces and nephews. Pott was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers Chester (Buster) NeSmith, William (Bill) NeSmith, Maxwell (Pete) NeSmith, and Ralph (Cooter Boy) NeSmith. Two very devoted nephews that the family wants to thank are James (Jimmy) NeSmith of Greenwood, FL and Raymond (Ray) NeSmith of Sneads, FL. In lieu of flowers, the family urges you to make a donation to the American Cancer Society, Big Bend Hospice (1723 Mahan Center Blvd., Tallahassee, FL 32308) or a church of your choice. Please take the time to take a friend fishing or plant a garden.
