Mr. Tompkins was born in Arcadia, Florida on September 24, 1927, to Daniel and Daisie (Walker) Tompkins. He grew up in LaBelle and Immokalee, Florida. From an early age he demonstrated responsibility and dependability. He was a WW11 Navy veteran (Pacific threatre). On return he went to Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia, Kansas. Bud dedicated his life to helping others through family, teaching, the Southern Baptist Church and the Masonic Lodge. He was a science teacher, department head, yearbook sponsor, Beta Club sponsor, Athletic Director and track coach for several years. He was awarded honor as the Teacher of the Year and for his deacon services. On retiring in 1988, he and his wife of 25 years, Shirley Logan Tompkins, moved to Lovedale Community where they were active in the community and at Lovedale Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife Shirley and daughters Mary Tompkins Dyess (John), Anita Bice, Marlene Cole and Karen Beeler. He is also survived by four grandchildren: Anthony Cole, Daniel, Jesse ( wife Brandi), and Sarah Beeler, his sister Sarah Blackburn and step sister Jeanne Hays (Alvin). He will be missed by many for his faith, hard work, compassion, dedication and humor. Memorial Services will be held at Lovedale Baptist Church in the Lovedale Community on Thursday, February 9, 2012 at 11:00 a.m., conducted by Dr. Steve Canada. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Lovedale Baptist Church Building Fund for a covered handicap entrance, 6595 Lovedale Rd., Bascom, FL 32423 or to Emerald Coast Hospice 4374 Lafayette St., Marianna, FL 32446.
