Mr. Herring was a lifetime resident of Malone and served two terms of Mayor starting September 1953. He was a veteran first serving in the Army Signal Corp enlisting in July of 1942 and then finished his armed services career in the Army Air Force being honorable discharged February of 1946. After his Air Force discharge, he owned and operated several successful businesses including Herring's Grocery, Herring Well Drilling, Herring's Radio and Appliance, and retiring from his last business, Malone Mobile Homes in 1992. Mr. Herring was an electrician by trade and provided wiring to some of the first rural homes to receive electricity in the early 1940's. He was elected Mayor of Malone in September 1953 and was instrumental in acquiring Malone's first water system, post office, housing project and sidewalks. He worked with the United States Dept. of Transportation in 1954 to help establish freight routes for the Atlantic and St. Andrew Bay Railway Company. Mr. Herring was a member of the Malone's Lion Club for ten years serving as President of that organization in 1957. During that time, he worked with the Dothan Chamber of Commerce in encouraging Troy State University to establish a branch campus in Dothan to serve neighboring students. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Malone and served as Deacon for approximately sixteen years. He is preceded in death by parents Howard and Bertha Herring, brothers Howard Coral Herring, Leroy Herring and sister Doris Cliff. He is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Mrs. Voncile Herring, brother Yates Herring of Malone, son Dwiot Holmes Herring, Jr., (Buddy) and wife Melissa of Tallahassee, son Tim Herring and wife Mary of Malone, daughter Judy Joyner and husband Gary of Hartford, Ala., daughter Polly Roberts and husband Gary of Columbus Ga., special nieces Lana Blackburn of Bascom and Kay Sevcik of Sacramento California and friend Wendy Alday of Malone. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren and five great grandchildren. The family will receive visitors at the First Baptist Church of Malone on Wednesday, October 28 from 5 till 7, the funeral service will be conducted at the First Baptist Church the following day on October 29 at 11:00 a.m. with burial at Friendship Baptist Church of Malone. Reverends Don Wilson and Jackie Register will be officiating.
