David Eugene Matthews

David Eugene Matthews, 81, of Dellwood, Florida entered into the presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on January 12, 2025. 

He loved tinkering with any project he could get his hands on, especially automobiles. He deeply loved his wife, children, grandchildren, family, and friends, but most of all his Lord Jesus. He was a lifetime member of Welcome Assembly of God Church where he served as a Deacon from May of 1978 until his passing. One of his greatest joys in this life, as he frequently said, was seeing all his children and grandchildren faithfully following the Lord. 

He proudly served in the United States Air Force as a jet engine mechanic. He also worked at Florida State Hospital in Chattahoochee for 43 years, serving in many capacities, eventually retiring as a rehabilitation therapist. He loved spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Sidney and Claudia Matthews; one daughter, Melinda Matthews; and two sisters, Wynelle Ethridge and Genelle Glass. 

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Barbara Howell Matthews; daughter, Belinda Stephens and husband, Tony; son, Michael Matthews; grandchildren, Caleb Stephens and wife, Casey, Hannah Cotton and husband, Joshua, and Rebecca Long; one brother-in-law, Donald Ethridge; two sisters-in-law, Carolyn Morgan and Dorothy Howell; along with many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. 

Funeral services will be 2 PM CST Wednesday, January 15, 2025 at Welcome Assembly of God Church, 6794 Messer Rd. Grand Ridge, FL 32442, with Revs. Gary Howell and Aaron Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel directing.

The family will receive friends from 12:30 - 1:30 Wednesday, January 15, 2025 at Welcome Assembly of God Church.
