Carolyn Anne Callaway

April 26, 1951 — August 17, 2023

Carolyn Anne Callaway, 72, peacefully passed and gained her heavenly wings Thursday, August 17, 2023 at Flowers Hospital in Dothan, Alabama after a short illness, with her surrogate Mommy and Sister by her side.  She was born April 26, 1951 in Marianna, Florida.  She was a lifelong resident of Jackson County, residing in Marianna until the death of her last surviving parent, and the past twenty-three years in Greenwood, Florida with her surrogate family (cousins).  As a lifelong member, Carolyn attended St. Luke’s Episcopal Church where she truly enjoyed singing.  Carolyn’s vision did not allow her to read from the prayer book or hymnal, but in time she fully recited responses, creeds, participated in Eucharists, and had a very broad and long song list memorized.

Carolyn enjoyed learning and attended Hope School for several years.  She enjoyed conversation and country rides, especially those she took weekly with her parents on Sunday afternoons, often stopping for soft-serve ice cream.  Carolyn had a lot of fun with her fur babies over the years and enjoyed being a dog mommy.  She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, interacting with infants and children, especially her toddler cousins, Rhett and Knoxx Gardner.  Carolyn was quick to scold when others were not exhibiting desired behavior or etiquette.  Carolyn kept us all on the straight and narrow!  She will be sorely missed by all.  While none of us are without sin, there are those among us that travel through this mortal life greatly free of temptation and sin.  God has Carolyn now.

She was preceded in death by her devoted and loving parents, William Joseph Callaway and Callie Powell Callaway; beloved cousins, Tommy Callaway, Timothy Gay and Van Smith.  Carolyn is survived by first cousins, Sue Callaway, Bobbie Gay, Ed Smith (Claudia), Al VanVoris; many more extended and loved cousins and family; dear cousins and surrogate family, Dee Callaway Helton, whom she called Mama/Mommy and her cousins, Fred Callaway and Anita Helton, whom she affectionately called brother and sister.

The family will receive friends and visitors from 1-2 PM, Friday August 25, 2023 in MacKinnon Hall at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Marianna, Florida, with refreshments served. Services will follow at 2 PM  in the Church with Fr. Bob Ott officiating; followed by the graveside at Pinecrest Memorial Gardens.

Carolyn would ask, “What’s the weather like?” and if told 100 degrees, she would tell you to dress cool (casual) and take an umbrella in case there is no shade!  Due to the heat advisory, the family understands, to stay safe and be healthy.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Partners for Pets Marianna, Florida, or St. Luke's Episcopal Church Marianna, Florida in memoriam of Carolyn Anne Callaway.
