James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel 4278 Lafayette Street Marianna, Fl 32446 850.482.2332 Buford Edward Tharpe, 80, of Cottondale passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 2, 2008 at Jackson Hospital in Marianna. He was retired from the Pensacola News Journal and spent the last seven years as a resident of the Chipola Retirement Center. Buford served his country as an artillery specialist in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, George Edward (Ed) Tharpe and Thelma Bush Tharpe, two sons: Bruce Edward Tharpe and Allen Wayne Tharpe, one brother, George Herman Tharpe, one sister, Ruth Tharpe Griffin. Survivors include one daughter, Jackie Mathews (husband Pat) of Montgomery, Alabama, two grand daughters, Tyler Ann and Mackenzie Mathews of Montgomery, brothers Linwood Edward Tharpe (wife Pat) of Bonifay, Lloyd Angus Tharpe (wife Rene) of Cottondale, two sisters, Mildred Tharpe Role (husband David) of Port Charlotte, Florida, Vaudine (Deanie) Tharpe Scott of Chipley, sister-in-law, Exa Tharpe of Cottondale, and brother-in-law, Early Griffin of Waycross, Georgia, and many nieces and nephews Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 5 at The Ashford Cemetery in Ashford, Alabama with Reverend John Ed Mathison officiating. James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel of Marianna will direct. No visitation will be held.
