Betty Cumbie Smith, 97, of Marianna, passed away on October 19, 2015 at Marianna Health and Rehab.
Betty was born on Dec. 20, 1917 in Morris, Georgia where she lived the first 10 years of her life. After the death of her father and an older brother in 1927, the family moved to Troy, AL. where her mother worked as secretary to the Supt. of the Alabama Baptist Children's Home. She graduated from Troy High School and from Troy State Teachers' College. Betty also received a year's training at Tulane School of Social Work in New Orleans, LA. She worked at Florida Baptist Children's Home as a social worker for five years after which she returned to North Florida to work with Health and Rehabilitative Services as a case worker and later as a supervisor where she worked for approximately 23 years before her retirement in 1981. She was a member of Marianna First Baptist Church where she was active in Sunday school, Woman's Missionary Union, and served as Organist for many years.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Samuel Hinton Smith, Jr.
Survivors include her children, Earl Smith of Greenwood, David (Rachel) Smith, Tim (Karen) Smith all of Marianna, and Betty Ann (Ronald) Byxbe of Dublin, GA.
She is also survived by ten grandchildren: Eric Smith of Greenwood, Jamie (Melody) Smith, Michael D. Smith both of Marianna, Joshua (Melissa) Smith, of Traveler's Rest, SC, Matthew (Sarah) Smith of Belize, Central America, Nathan (Kiersten) Smith of Tallahassee, Benjamin (Allison) Byxbe Lancaster, PA, Sarah (Justin) Bothwell Jacobus, PA, Stephen (Autumn) Byxbe Montrouis, Haiti, Rebekah Byxbe Atlanta, GA and sixteen great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday, October 23, 2015 at the First Baptist Church of Marianna, 2897 Green St., Marianna, FL, 32446 with Rev. Benjamin Byxbe Officiating. Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery with James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel directing.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, October 22, 2015 at James & Sikes Maddox Chapel.
