Amy James Baxter

July 1, 1950 — August 27, 2023

Our beloved mother Amy James Baxter, 73, of Greenwood, Florida, left her mortal body behind and her beautiful spirit returned to the loving arms of her Savior on Sunday morning, August 27, 2023, in Marianna, Florida. She was born in Biloxi, Mississippi. She was preceded in death by her parents, Morris and Stella Jacobs, who adopted Amy and her younger sister Charlotte when she was 5 years old. She married James Earl Baxter on November 22, 1969, and they were married for 53 years.

Being a loving wife, mother and grandmother were her main joys in life. She was a devoted homemaker and active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served faithfully in the church for the past 47 years.

Earning a College Degree was a lifelong goal that she achieved as an adult with a full scholarship to FAMU where she received her Bachelor's degree in social work with honors. Her family and church were the most important things in her life. She loved taking care of others, cooking for them, and was always quick with a friendly smile, words of encouragement and acts of service. She loved singing in the choir, reading, and spending time with family.

Amy always wanted a big family and is survived by her husband, James Earl Baxter; five children, Rachael (and Marc) Ellis, Jennifer (and Roy) Cazier, Travis Baxter, Robert (and April) Baxter, and Rebecca Spencer; 26 grandchildren with numerous honorary grandchildren, and 23 great-grandchildren. She was the oldest of eight siblings who were able to find each other many years later; Barbara, Charlotte, Lynn, Sidney, Clifford, Walter, James, and also two deceased sisters, Michelle and Pamela. Amy was preceded in death by her daughter-in-law, Robyn Shaffer Baxter and two granddaughters, Alysha and Arhea Baxter.

Visitation will be 1:00 PM, Tuesday, September 5, 2023 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Marianna. Funeral services will be immediately after at 2:00 PM with Jon Sims officiating. Interment will follow at the Greenwood Baptist Cemetery with James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel directing.
